On April 28, the 59th session of the “BaiChuan Forum” was successfully held. The lecture was delivered by Professor Debomoy Lahiri, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Academician of the National Academy of Inventors, and Distinguished Professor at Indiana University. It was chaired by Academician Weihong Song , Director of the Laboratory.

During the lecture, Professor Lahiri delved into the crucial role and therapeutic potential of microRNA in age-related diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease. Professor Lahiri first emphasized the critical importance of neuronal regulation, noting that neurons exist in vast numbers and high density, necessitating precise regulatory mechanisms to maintain their normal physiological state. MicroRNAs play a pivotal role in this process. Through predictive modeling and experimental validation, it was discovered that microRNAs can regulate the expression of the APP protein, which is closely linked to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease.

Professor Lahiri further detailed how dual reporter gene systems validate microRNA binding sites and demonstrated their specific mechanisms in regulating APP protein. He also discussed the expression levels of a specific microRNA (microRNA-298) across different patient cohorts, revealing a negative correlation with Alzheimer's disease risk, suggesting its potential role in prevention and treatment.
