Researcher Ahmed Elsheikh from Oujiang Lab Serves as Co-Chair and Leads Delegation at the 6th International Conference on

From October 8 to 10, 2024, the 6th International Conference on "New Technologies and Equipment in Medicine," hosted by the School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering of Beihang University and organized by the Beihang International Innovation Institute's Med-X Innovation Center, was successfully held at the Beihang International Campus in Hangzhou. Over 150 leading global experts and scholars in the interdisciplinary field of medicine and engineering from the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong (China), Macau (China), and other countries and regions attended the conference to share cutting-edge academic achievements.


As the Co-Chair of the conference and Editor-in-Chief of the journal New Technologies and Equipment in Medicine, Professor Ahmed Elsheikh, a researcher at Oujiang Lab, delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony on October 9. He reviewed the groundbreaking achievements of the journal since its inception and highlighted the significant contributions of Beihang University’s Med-X disciplines in promoting international scientific collaboration. Professor Elsheikh also emphasized that the conference provided a valuable platform for global experts in medicine and engineering to exchange ideas, encouraging innovative thinking in academic discussions and advancing technological innovations in the field. During the conference, Professor Ahmed Elsheikh engaged in in-depth discussions with global peers on key areas closely aligned with Oujiang Lab’s research focus, such as biomechanics, ophthalmology, and intelligent rehabilitation, laying a more solid foundation for the lab’s international research collaboration in these fields.

Gathering Global Wisdom, Building a Healthy Future Together! The conference also featured nine parallel forums focusing on biomechanics, biomedical optical imaging, cardiovascular research, bone biomechanics, biomaterials and regenerative medicine, mechanobiology, intelligent rehabilitation and medical robotics, and ophthalmology. Experts presented insightful reports on frontier trends, major scientific issues, and key technologies in these themes. Young scholars actively participated in discussions, exchanging ideas and sharing experiences in their respective research areas to explore new discoveries at the forefront of academia.

Team Introduction

Professor Ahmed Elsheikh is a Principal Investigator (PI) at Oujiang Lab and an internationally renowned expert in the field of ocular biomechanics. He is dedicated to advancing cutting-edge research in ocular biomaterial characterization, numerical simulation of ocular biomechanical properties, and the development of medical devices related to eye health management. Previously, Professor Elsheikh served as the Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Liverpool, bringing with him extensive academic and research experience.

As a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Professor Elsheikh has achieved outstanding accomplishments in the field of ocular biomechanics. Since 2012, he has received a special allowance awarded by the National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR BRC) at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London—the largest eye hospital in the UK—in high recognition of his significant contributions to the field. Additionally, Professor Elsheikh serves as the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Medicine in Novel Technology and Devices and is an editor for Current Eye Research, consistently exerting considerable influence in the international academic community.

The research team led by him has established an extensive collaborative network across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, and has successfully secured approximately £11 million in research funding to date. He has authored eight monographs, published over 220 journal articles and 150 conference papers, and achieved an H-index of 47, with his research cited more than 8,600 times.
